Gretel (11) South Coast NSW

Gretel arrived with a little bit of hullabaloo! On a Wednesday night, just three weeks into the new school year and only days after submitting our application, we met this sweet little lady in the middle of torrential rain and flash flooding. Walking through the front door of her new home, she was greeted by her buffoon of a brother, Frankie, and senior sister, Gidget - a chaotic and exciting welcome for such a timid little lady! Despite the commotion, Gretel quickly settled into family life and almost immediately took on the role of my little shadow. With time, patience, and lots of love, she has grown in confidence and become increasingly comfortable around friends and extended family. This keen little walker has certainly kept busy since arriving! She's enjoyed camping adventures, exploring beaches and rivers, visiting local café spots, perusing the offerings at Petbarn and Bunnings, and catching up with fellow rescue dachshunds at Saturday meets in Hastings. Major dental surgery in April, which involved the removal of 15 teeth and repair of an oronasal fistula, has given this little lady a new lease on life and revealed her true foodie nature (a typical dachs!)! At home, Gretel is a connoisseur of comfort - an aficionado of the couch who loves nothing more than curling up with her siblings in a cosy bed under a doona for a snuggle. She has become a wonderful companion to our dachshunds 8-year-old Frankie, and 14-year-old Gidget, although she is still wary of our budgies! Watching her personality blossom and seeing the bonds she has formed with our other dachs has been incredibly rewarding. A special thank you to Genevieve for transporting Gretel safely to us, Dr Will at Beach St Family Veterinary Clinic for taking wonderful care of her during surgery, and to the wonderful Karan and the entire Dachshund Rescue team for the exceptional care, dedication, and support they provide. We feel incredibly lucky to have Gretel as part of our family.
