"In July this year I decided to get a rescue to give a pup a 2nd chance and wanted a Dachshund as I had experience with them and always liked their feisty attitude. It then became a bit like Tinder. I was putting in applications for dogs, I did get the rejection email on some previous dogs. Then i saw a 5yr old Male Dachshund came up on Dachshund Rescue Australia page. I put in my application but also decided to make myself known to them as a person. I found and email address and started corresponding with Andrea, one of their rehoming co-ordinators. We then organised a time for me to meet Benson. I drove for three hours in pouring rain to the foster home to meet this little man. After a lot of getting to know each other, I could take him home with me. Benson was on anxiety medication and his first response to anything new was to bark loudly and continuously. But I knew he just needed time and understanding. He is the biggest cuddle bug and wants to always be by your side. (Including sleeping in the bed under the covers) I realised, he was a pup during covid, living in a unit in Melbourne. So constant attention and the centre of the world. Then it would have all changed and also the owner circumstances changed. Now he is off the meds, thanks to my vet guidance. He has my sole attention and is living his best dog life on a rural block. It was a challenge looking after a stubborn Dachshund with anxiety issues but we have our groove now and both our hearts are healing. A big thanks to DRA for trusting me with this beautiful soul". Dax is now living his best life in his forever home at beautiful Anna Bay. At just 2 years old, this playful and cheeky boy has settled in as though he’s always been part of the family. They say he’s a sweet, cheeky little character who brings endless joy, laughter, and cuddles into their lives. His family knew he was the missing piece to make their hearts complete. From the moment his new family saw his photo online, they knew he was the one. And when they finally met him in person, it felt like he was already theirs. His days are filled with adventures at the beach, playing around the house, and plenty of snuggles with his new family. Dax loves his time soaking up the sun in his favourite napping spots and filling the house with joy as he proudly parades around with his beloved squeaky toys, no other toys will do! Dax is soaking up every moment of the love and security he deserves. He has fitted right in and quickly wrapped everyone around his little paw, as he is adored, spoiled, and cherished every single day. We couldn’t be happier for Dax, he’s a shining example of how the right home, a little patience, and a lot of love can transform a life. Welcome home, Dax!

When Frankie came into our care as a foster, his prognosis seemed grim.  Vets had recommended behavioural euthanasia and he was on four different anxiety medications. His previous home became unmanageable after a baby arrived, and despite their best efforts and significant expense, his owners couldn't find a way forward. However, with time and patience, he started to settle. We gradually tapered his medications, and today, Frankie is medication-free. We gave him space, settled into a routine, didn't panic during his moments, and integrated him into a quiet family life. He now loves car rides to visit family, coexists peacefully with my parents' other reactive dachshund, loves pottering around the yard and enjoys being the centre of attention. Is he perfect? No. He's chaotic, severely stubborn  and has opinions about everything. But he's manageable, entertaining and so loveable. Sometimes dogs just need the right environment and time to decompress. Our advice to anyone fostering or owning a difficult or reactive dog is to lower your expectations, don't panic, let them be dogs, and give them time.  After 4 months of fostering and lots of progress made, we decided to adopt Frankie. He's medication-free, healthy, and living his best life being a lovable pain. The dog with such a poor prognosis is currently asleep on the couch, completely content. Sometimes it's just about finding the right fit! and we just love him.
